Chelsea Designers You Need to Know: Olivia Roat

Recently I had the pleasure in meeting Olivia Roat, a milliner working from her Chelsea studio in Michael Road - just off the King's Road. Olivia has set up her own label creating hats and headpieces.

Your inspiration
I studied art history and sculpture before I became a milliner and that has been a really good source for inspiration. Historical movements are great to look back at and artists for shapes, particularly sculptors. Nature is an obvious one but often quite random things I just come across.

Favourite designers
I love John Galliano for his decadence, Vivienne Westwood for her constant edge and Proenza Schouler for their rough feminine feel.

King's Road hang outs
I love the food in Al Dahl and Aztecca always has a great atmosphere.

The next fashion trends
That's always a tricky one but there is a lot of fitted leather around at the moment and high waisted pencil skirts. I think we will be seeing some power dressing creeping back in and more severe looks. Although I try not to look too much into trends, instead just go with what suits me and makes me feel attractive.

Tips for graudate designers
Do as much work experience as possible, it's invaluable.
